If you miss your classic Rubik’s Cube from the 80’s, why not give the iPad version a twirl. It may not have exactly stood the test of time the way some other toys do, but even younger generations know what that colorful cube is and how hard it is to solve.
Forty years ago, the Rubik’s Cube made its way into the hands and hearts of children around the world. By the 1980s, groups of “supercubers” were holding competitions to see who could solve the Rubik’s Cube the fastest. In March of 2013, a Dutchman broke the world record by solving the puzzle in 5.5 seconds. Today, the 3D object has been sold 350 million times, making it the top-selling puzzle game in the world.
In 2010, Magmic decided that the Rubik’s Cube would make a fine addition to the digital world. The app lets you solve the cube by flicking or swiping the screen to rotate columns and rows. You can move the cube around to view all sides in 3-D by rotating your device using motion controls.
The game comes with four different sizes and multiple modes, including the super challenging “Crazy Cube” mode. You can even get hints on how to solve the puzzle with the in-game solution guide.
Currently, Magmic is offering three limited edition cubes with an in-app purchase. Choose from the Iron Cube, Wood Cube, or Mystery Cube.
