Mega Man X 1

Mega Man dates all the way back to 1987, when the big-booted jet pack-wearing hero saved us from Dr. Wily for the first time. The game turned into a series, complete with spin-offs and ports galore. In 1993, Mega Man morphed into a second series called Mega Man X, in which about a dozen additional titles were made.

The first in the spinoff series, Mega Man X, launched on Super Nintendo (SNES) in 1993. Now, 21 years later, it is the sole Mega Man title available on the iPad.

The game takes place approximately 100 years after the original series. Players control “X” as he fights to undo the mess he created when he helped design the rogue Reploids, called Mavericks.

Set off on a whirlwind adventure searching for Mavricks in a run-and-gun style game. Players can choose from eight different levels that can be played in any order. Each level has a boss at the end. If you don’t have the right weapon to take down the boss, you might want to play a different level.

When you complete a stage, you’ll receive a new weapon. You can try killing a previous boss with the new firepower and see if you do better the next time around.

X can run, jump, and fire a rechargeable arm cannon. He can also scale, slide down, or jump off of nearby walls.

Mega Man X 2

Collect armor part capsules to upgrade X’s gear, including the arm cannon, also known as the “X-Buster.” Upgrading X’s armor will grant the player extra abilities, like better firepower and longer dash.

Mega Man X is available on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch for $4.99. Download it in the App Store today.
