Today, Samsung unveiled its new mobile purchase and coupon app called “Samsung Wallet.” What makes this app so important is not so much the features it offers, but the obvious similarities it shares with Apple’s “Passbook” mobile wallet.
The Samsung Wallet allows users to store event tickets, membership cards, coupons, and boarding passes in one central app. Participating companies will be able to scan a barcode in the app to redeem customer information for each item.
Samsung’s app will also offer time and location-based notifications, as well as, automatic updates to users’ membership points and boarding gate numbers for flight departures.
At this point in the game, you’d think Samsung would have worked harder to create an app that was at least somewhat different than Apple’s Passbook, but it appears that Samsung Wallet does just about the exact same thing as Passbook. Even the logo is an unimaginative reimagining of Apple’s logo.
It is hard to understand why, after spending two years in court over patent infringement lawsuits, would Samsung copy Apple’s design. Samsung has been fighting accusations that they ripped off Apple’s design concepts for the iPhone and iPad and now they are proving that they are not above such tactics with Samsung Wallet.

Even if you assume that the features are not uniquely Apple- many apps already offer some services that are similar to what Passbook does (although I would argue that Passbook is different because it centrally locates all of those services that would have been separately filed on your device)- you can’t argue that Samsung blatantly copied the logo with only minor adjustments.
Looks like we’ll be seeing these two in court again soon.
