Though slick, modern apps predominate on the App Store, there’s always room for a revamped classic to capture an iPad fan’s attention. Two recent releases, iPoe 2 — The Interactive and Illustrated Edgar Allen Poe Collection and Sherlock Holmes for the iPad will please literary devotees and iOS fans alike.

Spanish developer Play Creatividad released iPoe 2, as a follow-up this year’s earlier and very successful iPoe app (PadGadget = 5 stars). iPoe 2 includes two stories at present, Hop Frog and the Black Cat with his gothic narrative poem The Raven promised in a future update.

The second iPoe maintains the high standards of its predecessor. Play Creatividad’s take on Poe’s work uses interactive illustration to great effect and strives to underscore all the macabre elements that made Poe’s stories so terrifying and enduring. Download iPoe2 from the App Store for $3.99.

Sherlock Holmes for the iPad is free to download from the App Store. The app includes one story, The Five Orange Pips (which inspired an episode of Sherlock) and four other titles are available through in-app purchase for $0.99 each. Though the stories are abridged, each includes stunning graphics and entertaining interactive elements.

Sherlock Holmes for the iPad offers readers who are unfamiliar with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous sleuth an introduction to a selection of Doyle’s enduring stories.
